What format should I save my videos on Windows Motion picture Maker to ensure full screen on my HDTV?

I use windows motion picture maker and windows DVD maker to make dvd videos. I used to be able to make the entire DVD video fit full screen on my HD Television screen but my latest is a failure. Please help.
